Reference

We welcome reference inquiries in person and by letter, phone, and email.  Walk-in reference service is available weekday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.; consultation by appointment for in-depth research assistance may be made with a librarian with advance notice by phoning 607-9526 or emailing Heather Waldroup

Researchers are welcome to visit Denison Library to use the collections.  While our primary purpose is to serve the Claremont Colleges community, our collections are open to all scholars. We recommend that visitors coming from a distance e-mail us or write in advance to make an appointment with a librarian.

Instruction

Several types of instruction sessions are available at Denison Library.  The Denison staff is available to work with Claremont Colleges’ faculty to design library classes that best suit the needs of their students.  We encourage faculty members to contact a librarian to arrange course-related instruction for their students about library research, including, where appropriate, materials from the Rare Book Room and other Denison special collections. Such sessions are especially valuable if the course includes a major library research project.  We would appreciate advance notice for such requests and urge that sessions be scheduled when students are actually beginning their research.  If you are interested in arranging such a session and do not know the right person to contact, you can send an e-mail message to us.  (Note: If you are a faculty member advising seniors with their theses, you may want to schedule a research workshop session for your advisees.)

Circulation/Reserves

Circulation

As one of the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges, our circulation policies are in line with those of the other libraries in Claremont.  For more information see the Libraries’ policies.  Or, phone us at (909) 607-3941.

Reserves

Information for students:  Many Scripps faculty members place readings on reserve at Denison’s Circulation Desk.  Usually these readings are books and photocopies of articles, but they can also be other types of material such as videotapes or CD ROMs.  Reserve items circulate for periods of time specified by the faculty, usually 2 hours, 2 days, or 7 days.  Students must present a valid Claremont Colleges ID card to check out reserve materials.  To see a list of Denison Reserve items, you can search Blais, the online catalog, by course name or by instructor name.  We also maintain an in-library index to all course readings on reserve at Denison.

Information for Faculty:  Many Scripps faculty prefer the convenience of placing reserve readings at Denison.  See Blais for a general description of policies and procedures

As a courtesy to you and a convenience to your students, Denison Library will place your personal copies of books on reserve if we are unable to purchase the item(s) you need or if you anticipate extensive use.  Normally we will place a barcode and other identifying labels on the book; if you wish us not to, inform the Reserve staff when you submit the book(s).  As students may use reserves quite heavily, we cannot guarantee the condition of personal copies.  Due to space constraints, we must ask you not to submit more than two copies of each personal copy.  All copies will be returned at the end of the reserve use.

In addition, a copy of your syllabus will be helpful in facilitating the entire process.  If your reserve list is one you have used in the past, you may reactivate that list.

Also, please note that you may use ERes, the Libraries’ electronic reserves system.  In ERes you may provide access to scanned texts, images, and other types of materials for your classes.  For more details on ERes please refer to its related documents page

We would like to receive all course reserves well in advance of the beginning of the semester to ensure that all material is processed and available in a timely manner.  If you have any questions or suggestions about course reserves in Denison and ERes, please call at 607-3941 or e-mail the Reserves assistant, Cara Barker.

Study carrels located on the Wing second floor may be reserved by Scripps seniors. Other students and faculty may reserve a study carrel in the lower level of the Library. Contact Dorran Boyle or phone 607-3951 to reserve a carrel for the academic year.
